No, you don’t need a referral to see a psychologist. You only need a referral if you would like to claim a Medicare rebate.
No, there is no Medicare rebate available for counselling appointments in Australia.
Yes, you can claim a Medicare rebate to see a psychologist if you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.
To get a Mental Health Care Plan you will need to book an appointment with your GP. During your appointment, your GP will complete a Mental Health Care Plan with you. Just send that Mental Health Care Plan to us once you get it and we will organise an appointment for you.
Once you have attended your psychology appointment –
- Download the Medicare Express Plus app on your phone
- This will link to your MyGov account
- Attach your invoice or take a picture of it
- You will receive your Medicare rebate in 5 working days
Alternatively, you can visit your nearest Medicare office and show them your invoice plus your Medicare card.
